Supreme Pizza Pasta Skillet: Your New Go-To Weeknight Dinner

When the dinner rush hits, and you need a meal that’s both quick and universally loved, look no further than this Supreme Pizza Pasta Bake. In less than half an hour, you can gather the family around a warm, bubbly, and irresistibly cheesy pasta casserole. It’s generously loaded with all the classic pizza toppings – savory pepperoni, robust Italian sausage, crisp bell peppers, and sweet onions – ensuring every bite is packed with flavor.

Much like other popular skillet meals such as walking taco casserole or skillet lasagna, this pepperoni pizza pasta stands out because it requires minimal oven time. In fact, you can achieve that desirable bubbly, golden-brown cheese topping with just a quick 1-2 minute finish under the broiler. But don’t worry if you don’t have a broiler, or if you simply prefer not to turn on the oven; simply sprinkle with cheese and cover the skillet for about five minutes. The residual heat from the pasta and sauce will melt the cheese into gooey perfection, creating a dish that’s ready to serve almost instantly.

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Pizza Pasta Skillet

While our recipe is crafted to replicate the quintessential “supreme” pizza experience, its beauty lies in its remarkable adaptability. Feel free to unleash your culinary creativity and incorporate any of your favorite pizza toppings. Whether you’re a fan of earthy mushrooms, briny black olives, a meat-lover’s version with added ham and bacon, or prefer a lighter vegetarian pizza pasta bake, this recipe serves as the perfect canvas. Let’s delve into the core ingredients and their versatile alternatives.

  • Pasta: For this hearty casserole, we recommend using shorter pasta shapes that can easily be scooped and combined with the sauce and toppings. Excellent choices include penne, rotini, or even farfalle (bow-tie pasta). If you’re following a gluten-free diet, rest assured that most gluten-free pasta varieties work wonderfully here, maintaining their texture and absorbing the rich flavors.
  • Italian Sausage: The cornerstone of a supreme pizza, bulk Italian sausage provides a rich, savory depth. To lighten the dish without sacrificing flavor, consider substituting turkey sausage. Ground beef is another fantastic alternative, offering a familiar taste and texture that pairs perfectly with the other ingredients.
  • Pepperoni: We incorporate chopped pepperoni directly into the pasta for a burst of spicy, salty flavor throughout the dish. For that authentic pizza parlor aesthetic and an extra layer of crispiness, we also love to arrange a few whole slices on top before a quick broil. This creates beautifully curled and slightly charred pepperoni edges, just like your favorite pizza!
  • Veggies (Onions & Peppers): Chopped onions and green bell peppers are foundational to the “supreme” profile, adding sweetness and a subtle crunch. However, the possibilities are endless! Customize your pasta bake with other vegetables like sautéed mushrooms, sliced black olives, finely chopped broccoli, or even zucchini for added nutrition and flavor.
  • Crushed Tomatoes: Canned crushed tomatoes form the rich, vibrant base of our sauce. They are not only cost-effective but also provide a fresh, robust tomato flavor. While crushed tomatoes are our preferred choice, you can certainly use spaghetti sauce, marinara sauce, or even dedicated pizza sauce if that’s what you have on hand. If using pre-seasoned sauces, simply remember to adjust or omit the additional salt and seasonings as needed.
  • Seasonings: When using plain crushed tomatoes, a blend of dried basil and oregano elevates the sauce to true pizza-like perfection. For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of Italian seasoning, a dash of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, fresh or dried parsley for brightness, or a hint of garlic powder to complement the fresh garlic.
  • Cheese: Freshly grated mozzarella cheese is essential for that signature melty, stretchy texture. A blend of mozzarella and provolone, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan, can enhance the cheesy experience. For a dairy-free option, plant-based mozzarella alternatives melt surprisingly well and offer a similar creamy finish.

Cooked al dente pasta being gently mixed into a rich, simmering tomato sauce with sausage, pepperoni, and vegetables in a large skillet.
  1. Prepare the Pasta: Begin by boiling your chosen pasta (penne or rotini work best) according to the package directions. Cook it until it’s perfectly al dente, meaning it’s tender but still has a slight bite. Drain the pasta thoroughly and set it aside while you prepare the sauce.
  2. Brown the Sausage: While the pasta boils, heat the olive oil in a large, deep, oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the bulk Italian sausage to the hot skillet, using a spoon or spatula to break it up into smaller pieces. Cook the sausage, stirring occasionally, until it’s completely browned and no longer pink. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: Once the sausage is browned, add the chopped onions and green peppers to the skillet. Cook them with the sausage, stirring frequently, until they soften and become tender, which typically takes another 5 minutes. Then, stir in the minced garlic and cook for just 30 seconds more, until it becomes fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Stir in the dried basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and the crushed tomatoes. Make sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan as you stir, as these bits add incredible flavor to the sauce. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully. If you plan to broil, now is a good time to preheat your broiler.
  5. Combine Pasta and Cheese: Add half of the drained, cooked pasta to the simmering sauce, along with half a cup of mozzarella cheese. Toss everything together gently until the pasta is well coated and the cheese begins to melt. Then, add the remaining cooked pasta and toss again until fully combined.
  6. Finish and Serve: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the pasta. If desired, arrange additional pepperoni slices on top for extra crispiness and visual appeal. Place the skillet under the preheated broiler for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden, and the pepperoni slices are slightly crispy. Watch carefully to prevent burning. Serve your Supreme Pizza Pasta Skillet immediately and enjoy!

Customizing Your Pizza Pasta Bake: Endless Adaptations

One of the greatest features of this Pizza Pasta Casserole is its incredible versatility. It effortlessly adapts to a variety of tastes, dietary preferences, and whatever ingredients you have on hand, making it the ideal quick and easy dinner for any household. Whether you’re aiming for a lighter meal, navigating dairy-free needs, or adhering to a gluten-free diet, here are some fantastic suggestions to tailor this recipe to your liking:

  • Vegetarian or Lighter Meat Options: To transform this into a satisfying vegetarian dish, simply omit the Italian sausage and pepperoni entirely. You can boost the protein and texture with plant-based crumbles, lentils, or additional hearty vegetables like mushrooms or eggplant. For a lighter, leaner meat option, substitute the pork Italian sausage with ground turkey or chicken sausage.
  • Dairy-Free Adaptation: If you’re avoiding dairy, skipping the cheese is an easy way to make this recipe dairy-free. Alternatively, you can explore the wide array of plant-based mozzarella shred alternatives available in most grocery stores. Many of these melt beautifully and offer a similar cheesy experience. Nutritional yeast can also be stirred into the sauce for a savory, umami flavor without dairy.
  • Boost Your Veggies: This dish is a perfect vehicle for incorporating more vegetables into your family’s diet. Don’t hesitate to add extra veggies beyond the standard onions and peppers. Sautéed mushrooms, sliced black olives, finely diced zucchini, spinach (stirred in at the end), or even roasted red peppers can all enhance the flavor and nutritional profile of your pasta bake.
  • Spice It Up: For those who love a bit of heat, a generous pinch of red pepper flakes added with the seasonings will provide a wonderful kick. You can also opt for spicy Italian sausage instead of mild.
  • Cheesy Variations: Beyond mozzarella, consider blending in other cheeses like provolone for extra creaminess, a touch of Parmesan for sharp saltiness, or even some smoked gouda for a deeper, more complex flavor profile.

Mastering Gluten-Free Pizza Pasta: Tips for Success

As many families, including ours, prioritize gluten-free dinners, this Supreme Pizza Pasta Skillet has become a beloved staple. The good news is that it adapts seamlessly to gluten-free pasta. We’ve had great success with brands like Barilla gluten-free penne or rotini, which consistently hold their shape and texture, making them ideal for this casserole.

When cooking gluten-free pasta, a crucial tip is to always err on the side of undercooking it slightly, or cooking it to just al dente. Unlike traditional pasta, gluten-free varieties can transition from perfectly cooked to mushy quite rapidly. Since the pasta will continue to cook and absorb flavors when it’s mixed into the hot tomato sauce, undercooking it slightly ensures it retains a pleasant chewiness in the final dish.

Another important consideration for gluten-free pasta is how you salt the water. We generally advise against heavily salting the boiling water for gluten-free pasta because its starches tend to absorb too much salt, which can make the pasta itself overly salty. Instead, focus on seasoning the sauce generously to taste. This allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dish more effectively and ensures a balanced flavor profile.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

This Supreme Pizza Pasta Skillet is not only fantastic freshly made but also excellent for meal prep and leftovers. Here’s how to best store and enjoy your pasta bake:

  • Refrigeration: Allow any leftover pasta to cool completely. Transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. The flavors tend to meld and deepen overnight, making it even more delicious!
  • Reheating: For best results, reheat individual portions in the microwave until warmed through. Alternatively, you can reheat larger amounts in an oven-safe dish at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly. Add a splash of water or broth if the pasta seems dry.
  • Freezing: This casserole freezes beautifully. Once cooled, transfer the pizza pasta to a freezer-safe container. It can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. To reheat from frozen, thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat as described above. You can also bake directly from frozen, though it will take longer (about 45-60 minutes at 350°F/175°C, covered with foil to prevent drying).
  • Make-Ahead: You can prepare the sauce mixture (steps 2-4) in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When ready to cook, boil the pasta, combine it with the prepared sauce, add cheese, and finish under the broiler or with a lid to melt the cheese. This makes for an even faster weeknight meal!
